Vintage reselling has seasonal patterns that significantly affect which stock generates the best margins at which times of year. Buying the wrong stock for the coming season means slower sell-through, lower prices, and tied-up working capital. Buying ahead of what buyers are about to search for means faster sales and stronger prices. This guide covers autumn and winter sourcing strategy specifically, as the period from September through December consistently generates the highest individual item values in the vintage resale market.
WHY AUTUMN IS THE MOST IMPORTANT SOURCING WINDOW OF THE YEAR
Autumn is when the most valuable vintage categories peak simultaneously. Outerwear (coats, jackets, fleeces, puffers), knitwear, sweatshirts, and heavyweight denim all experience significant demand increases from September onwards as buyers start preparing for colder weather. The brands that carry the strongest margins in vintage resale, particularly The North Face, Carhartt, and Ralph Lauren knitwear, are at their most in-demand during this period.
Crucially, resellers who have sourced heavily in September, when demand is building but competition for stock is not yet at its peak, consistently achieve better margins than those who wait until October or November when buyer urgency is higher but so is competition from other sellers who have noticed the same trend.
WHAT TO SOURCE IN AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER
August is the optimal buying window for autumn stock. You are buying before peak demand, which typically means slightly lower prices from wholesale suppliers and faster availability of the best pieces before other buyers deplete stock.
The categories to prioritise in August and September:
Outerwear from gorpcore-relevant brands. The North Face fleeces and puffers are the anchor category. Heritage fleeces particularly in bold, earthy colourways (forest green, rust, burgundy) achieve the strongest prices and the fastest sell-through from September to December. Order in August to have stock photographed and listed before the demand spike hits in September.
Carhartt outerwear. Detroit jackets, blanket-lined work jackets, and Carhartt hoodie heavyweights all peak in autumn. A Grade A Detroit in a strong colourway listed in September will outsell the same piece listed in April at a price premium of 20 to 40% in most years.
Heavyweight denim. Levi's jeans are year-round but denim jackets, Sherpa-lined Levi's, and heavyweight denim outerwear peak in autumn. Source denim jackets in August for best pricing and availability.
Branded knitwear. Ralph Lauren knitwear, cable knit jumpers, and Lacoste polo knitwear all peak in autumn. Buyers who want branded knitwear in November are competing for the same stock. Buy it in August and be ready when the demand arrives.
WHAT TO AVOID SOURCING IN AUTUMN
Categories that underperform in autumn: lightweight summer dresses and tops (demand collapses from September), shorts and lightweight shorts (same), summer accessories including straw hats and lightweight bags. These categories should be cleared in August at a sale price rather than held through winter hoping for a spring recovery. Working capital tied up in out-of-season stock cannot be reinvested in the pieces that are actually selling.
THE SPECIFIC AUTUMN PRICE PREMIUMS TO EXPECT
Based on typical resale market patterns, the autumn premium for the right stock is material:
The North Face heritage fleeces: typically 20 to 35% higher in October to November versus April to May. Carhartt Detroit jackets: typically 15 to 25% higher from October to December. Heavyweight vintage sweatshirts: typically 10 to 20% higher from October to December. Y2K and summer categories: typically 15 to 25% lower from October to December versus May to July.
Timing your sourcing around these patterns, even imperfectly, meaningfully improves annual margin.
PLANNING YOUR AUTUMN SOURCING BUDGET
Autumn requires more working capital than any other period because the stock that performs best (outerwear, heavyweight pieces) typically costs more per piece than summer categories. Budget for a higher per-piece cost in August and September compared to your summer sourcing baseline.
