Carhartt label design has changed significantly across decades. Knowing which label corresponds to which era is the fastest way to authenticate and date a piece.
Pre-1980s: union-made labels, often featuring Made in USA alongside ILGWU or ACWA union tags. These are the rarest and most collectible pieces with extremely high construction quality.
1980s: the classic Carhartt label with a dark navy or brown background, yellow or white text, and the straightforward Carhartt wordmark. Made in USA is standard. Hardware is heavy-gauge and typically American-made.
Early 1990s: the iconic brown-background Carhartt label with yellow text that most collectors associate with peak vintage. Made in USA remains standard. This era includes the original Detroit jacket in its most sought-after form.
Mid to late 1990s: Made in Mexico starts appearing as production shifts. The label design remains similar but the manufacturing location changes. These pieces are still genuine Carhartt and sell well, but carry a slight premium discount compared to made-in-USA pieces.
2000s onward: labels become more modern in design, often with added sub-brand identifiers. Still genuine but not what most buyers mean when they say vintage Carhartt.
THE DETROIT JACKET: WHAT TO CHECK
The Detroit jacket is the most counterfeited and most sought-after Carhartt piece. Key authentication points:
Canvas weight. Authentic vintage Carhartt duck canvas is heavy and substantial, typically 12oz or heavier. Fakes often use lighter canvas that lacks the distinctive weight and feel. If you hold an authentic Detroit and a fake side by side, the weight difference is immediately apparent.
Blanket lining. Authentic vintage Detroit jackets have a distinctive blanket-style lining, typically in buffalo check or solid colour. The lining is substantial and well-stitched. Fakes often have thinner, more synthetic linings.

Triple stitching. Carhartt workwear uses triple-needle stitching on stress points, seams, pockets, and cuffs. Run your finger along the main seams. Three visible rows of stitching is a positive authenticity indicator. Single or double stitching on stress points is a red flag.
Tag placement. The main label sits at the back collar, centred and evenly stitched. On authentic pieces the label sits flat and square. On fakes it is often slightly off-centre, raised at one edge, or imprecisely stitched.
AUTHENTICATING CARHARTT TROUSERS AND DUNGAREES
The double-knee reinforcement on authentic Carhartt work trousers is substantial, two layers of duck canvas sewn with characteristic triple-needle stitching. On fakes, the double-knee is often thinner, with less stitching rows or visibly different fabric weight between the two layers. Metal rivet reinforcements at pocket corners are another tell.
